A typical day at Springboard will actually not be typical at all. Every day will look a little different but will be packed full of exciting activities, classes and group experiences, including things such as:
Working with our animals in the barn—from feeding and grooming to exercising and cleaning up after horses, chickens, cows, goats and more, students will get a first-hand look at animal husbandry. Great for all kids and animal lovers, and especially those who show an interest in veterinary medicine and related fields.- Drama and theatre—from playwriting and acting to set building and directing, students will be able to express themselves, learn to work together and exercise their creativity through the dramatic arts. Wonderful for kids who enjoy make-believe or who need a way to deal with emotions in a “safe place.”
- Book clubs and literature circles—from the classics to preteen favorites, the staff will help students improve their reading skills, help choose titles for groups to read and encourage group discussion. Terrific for kids who enjoy quiet time and like to identify with young characters in other places, times and cultures.
- School-wide games and team sports—from kickball and soccer to horseshoes and basketball, students have the opportunity to play sports competitively and for fun, learning teamwork, fair play and sportsmanship. Best for athletically oriented children, but designed to allow all students to participate in a positive, encouraging and healthy way.
Challenging outdoor adventures—from scavenger hunts and obstacle courses to hiking and camping, students are pushed to explore the outdoors, work in teams and learn to be resourceful. Ideal for nature lovers, athletes and competitors, and for bringing out the innate inquisitiveness and creativity in all children.- Math and Science—from wetland study to math in the cottage kitchens, students will be experiencing how math and science apply to their lives in a variety of ways. This method will fit with the curious, adventurous student who loves to see nature come to life and math become real while answering the question, "why do we have to learn this?"
All aspects of the program are designed to ease the transition to MHS, make it easier to forge new friendships and allow students to find their passions. Each day, time is set aside for everyday activities that further these efforts, and in the process, build community, self-reliance and character:
Self-reflection time—every child needs some downtime, so we are careful to schedule quiet periods that students can use to reflect and recharge. - Healthy meals prepared by students and staff—cooking and eating are important group activities that provide nourishment to students physically as well as intellectually. A lot can be learned in the kitchen, from measuring and following directions to planning ahead and developing healthy habits.
- Parent/sponsor interaction—it’s important to us that parents/sponsors are involved and in touch with their child as he or she gets accustomed to MHS at the Academy. Time is set aside regularly for you to interact by phone or online, so you can hear about all of the new experiences in his/her life.
- A lot of wholesome, good-time fun—regardless of the activity and the direction your child chooses, Springboard Academy provides endless opportunities for good old-fashioned fun in a safe and nurturing environment. Friendships will be made and many new experiences will make a positive impact on students’ attitudes toward learning, living and loving.
